Effective Material Flow ensures maintenance materials arrive at the right place, at the right time, to support the work that has been planned.

Inventory Management

Inventory Management governs how materials are received, stored, preserved, issued, returned, counted, and controlled throughout their lifecycle within the organization.

Effective Inventory Management establishes the documented processes and standards that ensure inventory remains accurate, protected, accessible, and available when required. It also provides guidance for managing slow-moving inventory, identifying obsolete materials, and continuously optimizing inventory investment.

Ask yourself: Do our inventory strategies provide confidence that critical maintenance work can begin as planned?

People, Processes, and Behaviors

Poor Materials Management is seldom caused by people who don't care.

More often, it is the result of inconsistent processes, unclear expectations, poor data, and behaviors that have developed in response to an unreliable system.

Technicians begin storing parts in toolboxes because they no longer trust inventory accuracy.

Buyers expedite orders because parts aren't in the storeroom despite what the inventory system says.

These behaviors are symptoms of the system, not the cause.

People naturally adapt to the system they work within. Improve the system, and the behaviors begin to improve with it.

Improving Materials Management requires educating people, strengthening processes, improving material data, and establishing clear accountability. As the system improves, service levels grow along with confidence in the storeroom.
